Always prune your trees when they are 3 or more years older. Tip pruning is best, this encourages leaf production in the middle of the tree giving it a full bush like presence. After 3 years, try and wean your trees off of any and all (soil ) fed commercial fertilizers, both organic and inorganic if possible. Feed them only, compost as well as foliar feeding your trees. The root system of citrus trees are very sensitive when grown in containers. The roots , although may be vigorous in some cases, the stems of the roots are very and fragile and some cultivars can be very contrictive. Fertilizers that are power or granules can sit around the root system for a long time and cause a lot of damage you do not see because under the soil is not seen by the naked eye.
