Sermon Series: Mastering the Basics, Part 6

Message Summary: Laying on of hands occurs a number of times in the Bible, and we shall consider most of these. “Laying on of hands” seems more physical and you wonder what value it would have spiritually. But it is more what the “lay on of hands” means spiritually that is important. As a basic teaching, it specifically refers to the reception of the Holy Spirit. The act of “laying on of hands”, signifies “TRANSFERENCE, TRANSMISSION, IMPARTATION, and IDENTIFICATION.” It specifically refers to the reception of the baptism of the Holy Spirit and impartation of the gifts of the Spirit.

Our AUTHORITY to transfer a BLESS:
Legal grounds to give our blessings. Galatians 3:7-9,14
“It is your faith in Jesus Christ that qualifies you.”

Positional grounds to give our blessings. 1 Peter 2:5,9
“We have been made priest of God.”

1. The Old Testament and “LAYING ON OF HANDS.”
A. Isaac blessed his sons. Jacob laid his hands on his grandchildren and blessed them. Genesis 27:26-40; Genesis 48:14-16; Hebrews 11:20,21
B. The Old Testament sacrificial offering. Leviticus 1:4; 3:2; 16:21
C. The Children of Israel transfer their duties to the Levites. Number 8:10-16
D. Appointing a successor to Moses. Numbers 27:15-23; Deuteronomy 34:9

2. The New Testament and “LAYING ON OF HANDS.”
A. Jesus and His earthly ministry of healing. Mark 6:5; Luke 4:40; Luke 13:13; Mark 10:16

3. The Great Commission and Healing by “LAYING ON OF HANDS”.
A. Believers may lay on hands for healing. Mark 16:17,18; Acts 14:3; Acts19:11; Acts 28:8
B. Receiving the Holy Spirit by “LAYING ON OF HANDS”. Acts 8:16-17; 9:17; 19:6

4. The appointment of the First Deacons and Ministers with “LAYING ON OF HANDS”. Acts 6:1-6; Acts 13:2,3; 1 Timothy 4:14; 2 Timothy 1:6
