Having a dog who isn’t afraid to speak up can be a great asset for pet parents but sometimes it can also be a liability. If your dog has started to bark excessively and you’re looking to teach them to tone it down a bit, knowing what sets them off is a crucial first step in getting them to use their inside voice.

Consider the environment, time of day or situations that seem to instigate their barking. Do they bark when traffic is audible outside, or when another dog passes by with their parent on a walk? Do they bark when you pick up your keys and head for the door? Once you’ve assessed what kind of barker they are, try these tips to see if you can coax some quieter communication from them.

1. Block your dog’s view
If your dog is protective of you or other pets in the household, to the extent that passersby set them off, try blocking their view of the outside. You can use an opaque window film to obscure their ability to see the bark-bait and hopefully “out of sight” results in “out of mind” for them.

2. Provide busy toys
Engaging toys can be another excellent way to encourage quiet by keeping them occupied with something stimulating. This way, they’ll be too engaged in play to notice the goings on outside and won’t think about reacting to whatever is out there.

This can also be useful for other types of barkers for the same reason.

3. Use a white noise machine
For alarm barkers or watchdog types, it can be helpful to drown out some of the common sounds that typically set them off. A white noise machine is an easy way to provide the constant sound to cover up things like passing trucks or passing pedestrians.
