Stars and filmmakers came together in Hollywood tonight to celebrate the world premiere of Walt Disney Animation Studios’ original action-packed adventure Strange World— opening exclusively in theaters Nov. 23. Attendees included Academy Award- and Tony Award-nominated actor Jake Gyllenhaal, who lends his voice to Searcher Clade, a family man who finds himself out of his element on an unpredictable mission; comedian, actor, writer, filmmaker and musician Jaboukie Young-White, who’s the voice of Searcher’s 16-year-old, adventure-seeking son, Ethan; and actress, producer, bestselling
author and TIME100 cover honoree Gabrielle Union, who provides the voice of Meridian Clade, an accomplished pilot and Searcher’s partner in all things. Joining the voice cast were filmmakers Don Hall (director), Qui Nguyen (co-director/screenplay by), Roy Conli (producer) and composer Henry Jackman (music by).
Strange World is a 2022 American computer-animated science-fiction adventure film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. The 61st film produced by the studio, it was directed by Don Hall, written and co-directed by Qui Nguyen, and produced by Roy Conli. The film stars the voices of Jake Gyllenhaal, Dennis Quaid, Jaboukie Young-White, Gabrielle Union, and Lucy Liu. Set in Avalonia, the film follows the Clades (Gyllenhaal, Quaid, Young-White, and Union), a legendary family of explorers, and Callisto Mal (Liu), the leader of the exploration, who must set aside their differences as they embark on a journey to a mysterious land inhabited by surreal lifeforms to save a resource called the Pando from losing its energy power source. Strange World takes inspiration from pulp magazines, Journey to the Center of the Earth (1864) and King Kong (1933). In addition, the land of Avalonia was given an orange-and-white color scheme to contrast with the titular strange world, as the filmmakers chose red and magenta. To communicate non-verbally, several animators worked to create the movement of the character Splat. While the film is predominately CGI, the film does incorporate 2D animation from Randy Haycock with additional 2D animation by Eric Goldberg and Mark Henn in certain scenes.
Strange World introduces a legendary family of explorers, the Clades, as they attempt to navigate an uncharted, treacherous land alongside a motley crew that includes a mischievous blob, a three-legged dog and a slew of ravenous creatures. The voice cast also includes Dennis Quaid as Searcher's larger-than-life explorer father, Jaeger; and Lucy Liu as Callisto Mal, Avalonia's fearless leader who spearheads the exploration into the strange world.
Strange World premiered at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles on November 15, 2022, and was theatrically released in the United States on November 23. The film was noted for introducing Walt Disney Animation Studios' first openly LGBTQ lead character. The film received generally positive reviews from critics, but was a box office bomb, with projections of as much as a $147 million loss for Disney.
Synopsis :
The Clade, a family of legendary explorers, discover an unexplored world full of dangers and fantastic creatures. They are aided in their quest by a mischievous blob and their three-legged dog. Unfortunately, the quarrels between the different members of the group threaten to derail this new mission, which is - by far - the most crucial.
