Monetization on YouTube has changed quick a bit already in 2023 and has caused quite a bit of controversy along the way. Firstly, creators will finally start to get paid for YouTube Shorts starting February 1st. However, in order to get monetized, you either need to get 4,000 watch hours on content over the last 90 days, or get 10 million shorts views in the last 90 days. Some creators are finding that these metrics are way too high and are criticizing YouTube for keeping revenue from creators who can't reach this. Also, YouTube has implemented a new policy about creators' usage of profanity in videos in which creators are unable to swear during the first seconds of the video. These new rules are effecting older videos as well, causing many videos from certain creators to become demonetized overnight. The gaming community specifically is at the forefront of this controversy, as they have been effected by these new rules the most. Today, we discuss our thoughts and add detail to these issues.
