IN THIS EPISODE: There was a question sent in about copying and tracing to learn how to draw. The answer is yes, this is how most of us learn how to draw. I spent a long time copying from the old masters paintings and old comic books from the 60s when I was younger to learn how to draw. You can find drawings and paintings by Da Vinci and Michelangelo and Raphael and Rubens and copy them to learn about anatomy and composition and color theory among many other things these guys used to make the great art of their times. You can place a sheet of tracing paper on their works and trace it or copy it onto a clean sheet of paper. There is so much to learn. And the same for animation characters, download a model sheet, trace or copy the poses. Understand by analyzing what the pose is about and what makes it work, where is the line of action, what are the volumes? I know everything is online these days, but you can take a little trip to the local library and look through the art books at the great art that has been made by humans over these last few thousand years. A little art never hurt anyone. We’ll look at some other studios’ characters in the future. In the meantime, keep drawing!
