A California Police chief ends body camera analysis after the program came under pressure from the city's police union.

Former Police Chief of Vallejo, California, Shawny Williams, implemented the program in 2021 using Truleo, a Chicago-based software analysis company. After Williams left, his former deputy chief Jason Ta was in charge and shortly canceled the program.

Truleo began using artificial intelligence to analyze officers' body camera footage, detecting unprofessional behavior and prompting supervisor review. However, when the software started highlighting instances of misconduct, pushback ensued within the department, leading to the cancellation of the contract.

The Vallejo Police Department, which already faced criticism for handling misconduct allegations, reviewed less than one percent of its body camera footage.
Vallejo police department says it will revert to a system where only critical incidents receive a review, limiting the oversight of officer conduct.
