Ebru, the Turkish Art of Marbling

Ebru, is also referred to as the art of paper marbling or painting on water.
It’s a traditional Turkish art of paper decoration.

Colorful patterns are created by sprinkling and brushing color pigments on a pan of oily water.
and finally transferring the pattern onto paper.

The tools used are brushes made of horsehair, ox-gall and tragacanth, which is a natural gum obtained from the dried sap of several species of Middle Eastern legumes.

Patterns are created by moving pen like tools trough the water.

Ebru’s roots can be traced back to the 13th century Turkistan, from where this decorative art
then spread to China, India, Persia and Anatolia.

Seljuk and Ottoman calligraphers and artists used marbling to decorate books, imperial decrees, official correspondence and documents.

It was common for classical Ottoman arts, to be taught only in a master to apprentice system, not by writing or explanation. Artists devoted years and even their entire lives to mastering this art.

Finally the artist transfers the patterns onto a paper.
