Описание к видео Why 300 Japanese Planes Couldn't Stop This P-40 — He Never Got His Medal of Honor

Why Ensign Albert Earnest flew his shot-up TBF Avenger 200 miles using only trim tabs during WW2 — and became one of only three survivors from Torpedo Squadron Eight at Midway. This World War 2 story reveals how one pilot discovered emergency flight control when all primary systems failed.

June 4, 1942. Ensign Albert Kyle Earnest, 25 years old, pilot of the first TBF-1 Avenger ever used in combat, attacked the Japanese carrier fleet at Midway. Zero fighters swarmed his six-plane formation. Within three minutes, five TBF Avengers exploded. Earnest's elevator controls were shot away completely. His instrument panel was destroyed. His gunner was dead. Every aviation manual said an aircraft cannot fly without elevator control. His instructors had never taught backup procedures for this. Flight engineers called it aerodynamically impossible.

They were all wrong.

What Earnest discovered that morning over the Pacific wasn't about following procedures. It was about understanding that trim tabs — designed only for fine adjustments in level flight — could control pitch if used with extreme precision and patience. By the end of that day — the Battle of Midway's opening torpedo attacks — naval aviators realized what one ensign had proven. You could fly home on trim tabs alone. And you could survive what seemed impossible.

This technique became a case study at naval flight schools, teaching student pilots emergency control procedures that saved lives throughout the Pacific War. The principles discovered 200 miles from Midway continue to influence aviation survival training today.
