Koniambo Nickel: a deeper look into Glencore's Koniambo operation in New Caledonia

Описание к видео Koniambo Nickel: a deeper look into Glencore's Koniambo operation in New Caledonia

Glencore’s Koniambo mine is located in New Caledonia, mining nickel in this French territory in the South Pacific.

Once its industrial complex reaches peak production, Koniambo Nickel will make New Caledonia one of the world's largest nickel producers. This has been the country’s dream since 1966, when General de Gaulle announced a second New Caledonia mining and metallurgical plant to be constructed in the North Province.

With its origins enmeshed in the history of New Caledonia industry, Koniambo Nickel represents a world-class operation built upon respect for the environment and people, with a high quality nickel deposit, controlled costs and a demanding sustainable development policy.

From extraction to export, we use cutting-edge technologies at our nickel mining and production complex. This encompasses: drilling and modelling; extracting and preparing ore; ore transportation; our proprietary Nickel Smelting Technology (NST); ferronickel refinement; breaking the ferronickel into pellets for transport; and conditioning for delivery.

As Koniambo is designed to be a long-term operation, our strategic focus is to build a business with sound fundamentals: environmental management approaches that limit impact, dialogue with local communities, and a solid economic base. This will allow nickel mining in New Caledonia to continue for generations to come.
