Salicylic acid and lactic acid are categorized as chemical exfoliants—specifically Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs) and Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs)—that work by dissolving the cellular "glue" that holds dead skin together. The skin surrounding the eyes is significantly thinner and more delicate than the rest of the face, lacking the robust oil glands found on the forehead or chin. Applying these acids to the periorbital area can lead to severe irritation, chemical burns, or extreme dryness, as they penetrate too deeply for such a fragile barrier to handle. Furthermore, if these acids migrate into the eye itself, they can cause painful corneal irritation or conjunctivitis, making them unsuitable for use near the lash line. In contrast, hyaluronic acid is not an exfoliant but a humectant—a substance that attracts and holds onto water molecules. Because it is a molecule naturally found in the human body's connective tissues and eyes, it is inherently biocompatible and non-irritating when formulated correctly. Many eye creams specifically utilize hyaluronic acid to "plump" fine lines and hydrate the thin skin without compromising its integrity. However, it is essential to use formulations specifically labeled for the eyes, as these are ophthalmologist-tested to ensure the pH balance and preservatives won't irritate the ocular surface. While a lactic acid serum might cause the eye area to peel or sting, a hyaluronic acid eye gel works to soothe and maintain the moisture barrier.
