Beckett Simonon Valencia Wholecut Shoe Review: An Outstanding Sub-200

These wholecut shoes use a Blake construction with full-grain Argentinian calfskin leather uppers. Inside is a wholecut vachetta lining. The inside uses all-natural materials, and Beckett Simonon uses no chrome in the tanning process.

Many sub-$200 shoes only give you a half leather lining, but a full leather lining holds many advantages. Odor reduction and moisture wicking, for example, are improved, therefore it's a great feature to find at this price point. There's a suede heelguard that prevents slipping. Furthermore, the Blake construction results in a quicker break-in period.

This is not the most formal shoe you'll buy, firstly, because of the color. Here we have the Valencia in tan, but it comes in different colors.

Tan in particular goes well with a beige, linen or navy suit, especially in the summer.

A wholecut, however, is more on the formal side, as there are minimal adornments. Any time you add adornments to a shoe, you lower its formality somewhat.

While a wholecut is generally a business professional style, this colorway is more casual. In black, this particular style of shoe would be a good choice for a first dress shoe.

Usually, a casual dress shoe like this Valencia in the tan colorway would be a fifth-to-tenth purchase.
