In this series of videos I cover jazz piano voicings. I'll go through a number of different voicings which will make any jazz song sound strong and professional.

This Jazz Piano Tutorial is about open position chord voicings, also known as spread voicings. All this essentially means is playing all the notes in a chord over a distance greater than 1 octave.

Good open position voicings can be voiced as follows:
LH: Root, 3rd (or 10th)
RH: 5th, 7th

LH: Root, 7th
RH: 3rd, 5th

Voicing the Root and 5th is the left hand is generally avoided.

Voicing chord in this way creates a richer and more well rounded sound than playing block chords (AKA closed position).

When playing solo piano - so playing chords and melody at the same time - make sure to chose a voicing which is has the melody note on top.
