Grid on, Grid off ~ Learning light spread... LIVE!

Grids in the studio are essential items in my experience. The smaller the studio, the more important grids become when you need to control light spill. So in my 15' x 10' small home studio I have a grid for almost all of my softboxes and reflectors but how EXACTLY does a grid alter the shape of the light?
