Описание к видео SST Interviews: Artnel and Neville Johnson on the Evolution of Venn Street Nightclub | Huddersfield

Artnel and Neville Johnson were both involved with Huddersfield’s Venn Street club, a premiere venue for reggae and sound systems in the UK in the 1980s. In this clip, they remember how responsibility of running of the nightclub came to be passed down through the Johnson family, and recall the evolution of sound system equipment that coincided with Venn Street's own changes.

Artnel Johnson was born in Jamaica and travelled to Huddersfield in the 1960s. He was a founder member of the Huddersfield West Indian Association. This group set up and ran the famous Venn Street nightclub, officially known as Cleopatra’s and Silver Sands. At the club, Artnel worked as the technician.

Neville Johnson is Artnel’s nephew. His father, Derrick Johnson ran the Venn Street club in the 1980s, when it was known as Silver Sands. Neville was also part of the King Maestro sound system.

The interview was conducted and produced by Mandeep Samra and Gopal Dutta in Huddersfield in 2021. Zoe Opal East was camera operator.
