STORYLINE:
Representatives from multiple Indigenous nations in Ecuador gathered on Friday to hold a congress to decide on a new governing council for their confederated tribes for the next three years.

A group of women led the ceremony to bless the leaders of each tribe before the speech of Leonidas Iza, the current president of the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (CONAIE).

During the elections last March, the confederation that gathers 18 different Indigenous groups agreed to the left-leaning candidate as an option to the reelection of president Daniel Noboa.

Noboa was reelected for a four-year term until 2029.

He first to power in 2023 to serve a transition period that completes that of his predecessor who dissolved the assembly

Iza said that Indigenous representatives should expect a "tough" debate to reach new agreements on self-determination, Indigenous justice separate from the Ecuadorian government, a community management model, and a way to finance their projects.

The government's census bureau says there are 1.3 million Indigenous people in Ecuador.
