Exploration (X-Ray Animation) is a short experimental video created from scanned images of mistletoe galls produced at the X-ray Laboratory of Ho Teaching Hospital, Ghana. Using medical imaging as both method and metaphor, the work peers beneath visible surfaces to reveal hidden structures of attachment, dependence, and transformation.
Mistletoe galls, formed through parasitic occupation of host trees, are presented here as living archives of intrusion and adaptation. Through animation and layered visual sequencing, the video constructs “worlds within worlds,” exposing how parasitic systems reorganise space, resources, and identity from within. Metaphorically, these biological processes echo postcolonial dynamics, where external forces embed themselves into social, economic, and cultural systems, reshaping them over time. The work invites viewers to reflect on how power operates quietly, persistently, and often invisibly, leaving enduring marks on both living organisms and human institutions.
Situated at the intersection of science, art, and critical theory, Exploration reclaims clinical imaging as a poetic and political tool. It transforms diagnostic technology into a medium for historical reflection, ethical inquiry, and visual storytelling.This video forms part of an ongoing practice that investigates embodiment, ecology, memory, and postcolonial entanglement through interdisciplinary artistic research.
