9 Poetry Pearls: Frigyes Karinthy: Nihil (Nihil)
Translated by Leslie A. Kery
Performed by Adam Boncz
Frigyes Karinthy (25 June 1887 – 29 August 1938) was a Hungarian author, playwright, poet, journalist, and translator. He was the first proponent of the six degrees of separation concept, in his 1929 short story, Chains (Láncszemek). Karinthy remains one of the most popular Hungarian writers. He was the brother of artist Ada Karinthy and the father of poet Gábor Karinthy and writer Ferenc Karinthy.
ABOUT THE PROJECT:
Amidst the pandemic's isolation in 2020, two actors, Andrea Sooch and Adam Boncz embarked on a unique journey to bridge cultures and languages using nothing but their cellphones. Across nine captivating short videos, they breathed life into the classic verses of some of Hungary’s most prominent poets, adding vivid imagery to the words of the English translation. The poems unveil the nuances of the Hungarian soul, fostering a deep connection between the poet's intentions and the hearts of their English-speaking audience.
Adam Boncz - Adam Boncz graduated from the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute in New York, and performed on the New York stages for more than 10 years including LaMaMa ETC, Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. In addition to Hungarian film and television credits, he has also appeared in several international film and TV productions, including Netflix's Shadow & Bone, the CBS crime series FBI: International and Sky Channel's The Fear Index.
