Title: Rahul Gandhi vs Narendra Modi – The Face of Crony Capitalism

In the arena of Indian politics, the ideological clash between Rahul Gandhi and Narendra Modi represents more than a contest between two individuals — it embodies two contrasting visions of India. Rahul Gandhi has consistently accused the Modi government of promoting “crony capitalism”, where wealth and power remain concentrated in the hands of a few business elites. On the other hand, Narendra Modi projects himself as the “Sevak of the Poor.” Yet, a closer look at data and policies reveals a very different picture.

Crony capitalism refers to an economy where political power and business interests are deeply intertwined, and government policies favor a select group of industrialists. In India, this nexus has reached unprecedented levels under the Modi regime. Reports from Oxfam India and the World Inequality Lab reveal that the top 1% of India’s population now controls over 40% of the nation’s wealth, while the bottom 50% own barely 3%. Between 2014 and 2023, India witnessed a surge in billionaires — from 102 to 166, according to the Hurun Global Rich List 2023.

The rise of business empires like Adani and Ambani during Modi’s tenure has become a textbook example of crony capitalism. Gautam Adani’s net worth grew from $5.5 billion in 2014 to over $150 billion by 2022 (Bloomberg, 2023). His conglomerate rapidly expanded into ports, airports, coal mines, and solar projects — often receiving government contracts or regulatory leniency. LIC and other public institutions were even encouraged to invest in Adani’s ventures, raising concerns about the misuse of public funds.

At the policy level, the government’s decisions often tilted in favor of large corporations. The corporate tax rate was reduced from 30% to 22%, while indirect taxes like GST and fuel levies burdened the common citizen. The “Make in India” initiative largely benefited big industrial houses rather than small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), which still face severe credit shortages. Demonetization devastated informal businesses but boosted digital payment and e-commerce giants — sectors dominated by large private players.

Rahul Gandhi’s persistent question in Parliament — “Why does every sector lead to the same name: Adani?” — captured the essence of public doubt. His term “Suit-Boot Ki Sarkar” symbolizes a government more committed to corporate welfare than public welfare. The Electoral Bonds Scheme, which made political funding opaque, further cemented the link between the ruling party and business tycoons. According to the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), the BJP received over 55% of all political donations through these bonds.

In contrast, Rahul Gandhi’s campaigns like Bharat Jodo Yatra and Nyay Yojna highlight his counter-vision — one focused on reducing inequality and restoring economic justice.

Ultimately, Narendra Modi has become not just a political leader but the face of a governance model where power, policy, and profit converge. This growing alignment between political authority and corporate control threatens the very foundation of Indian democracy. The real question today is not Rahul vs Modi — but Democracy vs Crony Capitalism.
