Meet the Russians fighting for Ukraine I Times Reports

Russian citizens are fighting for Ukraine against Vladimir Putin’s regime as part of the Freedom of Russia Legion, a military unit whose operations are overseen by Ukrainian intelligence.

As well as seeing action in eastern Ukraine, the Legion has carried out armed incursions into Russian border towns in the Belgorod region, clashing with the Kremlin’s troops and even briefly occupying patches of territory.

In Moscow, it has been declared a terrorist organisation and people have been sentenced to up to 12 years in prison for allegedly plotting to carry out acts of sabotage on its behalf.

The Times meets with Legion members near Ukraine's frontline to understand their hopes and fears in their fight against Putin's army.
