The documentary tells the story of the unique relationship between Italy and Paramount Pictures, one of the most important production studios in the United States of America. Paramount Channel’s first original feature-length production The Italian Jobs: Paramount Pictures e l’Italia, tells the story of the company and pays tribute to the special relationship that has always existed between the Hollywood giant and the Belpaese. Initial clips from The Italian Jobs: Paramount Pictures e l’Italia were presented in September at the 74th edition of the Venice Film Festival and now the final version is coming to the Rome Film Festival, where the documentary will premiere on Tuesday 24 October at 8.30 pm at the MAXXI Museum.

The documentary was written and directed by Marco Spagnoli, produced by Ascent Film and based on an idea by Luca Cadura for Kenturio, created in collaboration with Cinecittà Luce e Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia. The film includes exclusive interviews with some of the leading players of the Italian film industry, such as Enrico Lucherini, Felice Laudadio, Roberto Faenza, Tonino Pinto, Claudio Masenza, Gianni Bozzacchi, Don Most, Massimo Cristaldi, Paola Corvino and Franco Mariotti, and the participation of some exceptional figures from Italian cinema: Greta Scarano, Andrea Delogu, Francesco Montanari, Francesco di Raimondo and Anna Pavignano.

The voiceover of the documentary was recorded with Adriano Giannini, actor and voice artist who, some might say, has the history of Italian cinema in his DNA, while the voices of Luca Argentero, Stefano Fresi and Greta Scarano were chosen in order to bring to life extracts from letters and diaries written by the stars of the documentary. The Italian Jobs: Paramount Pictures e l’Italia analyses the link between the films, Paramount production and Italy, exploring the history of international cinema and investigating the decisions that led to certain films being produced in our country. Part of the documentary’s visual reflection is made up of rare and previously unseen material that tells the story, in a new and original way, of the extraordinary relationship between this studio and our country, exploring for the first time, how this link went on to become so influential in the lives and careers of the talents involved in the productions and in the Italian co-productions.

Italy has always been, in productive terms, one of the privileged locations for Paramount productions, the first studio to produce in Italy and the first in 1937 to contract an Italian actress, Isa Miranda. This careful attention to Italy and the country’s talents continued over time, helping Anna Magnani to win Italy’s first Academy Award for acting for her role in The Rose Tattoo, and by casting Italian actresses, such as Sophia Loren and Virna Lisi, in various productions.

The Italian Jobs: Paramount Pictures e l’Italia also tells the story of two men, two Italian-American executives, Pilade Levi and Luigi Luraschi, who came to Italy at the end of the Second World War to re-vive the Italian film industry; their work went on to have a significant influence on cinema worldwide. The idea of producing European films financed by American funds, in fact, originated in Italy with Paramount Pictures. Masterpieces such as Nights of Cabiria, Romeo and Juliet and The Conformist, to name just a few, were created precisely thanks to the work of these two men. The exclusive testimonies of Gioia Levi and Tony Luraschi, the children of the two executives, describe how their fathers were not only businessmen but how their lives were dedicated entirely to cinema.
