Fireworks can freak your dog out. Some dogs bark, some shiver, some shut down! In our area fireworks go off all the time and Fourth of July is very intense for our dog that doesn’t like fireworks. We work with her on getting her desensitized to fireworks by playing fireworks on our sound system and tv. Treating her and playing with her while sounds are going off around her. She’s gotten better but we continue to work with her on desensitization of loud noises like fireworks.

This is how we prepare our dog for fireworks, and how we get our dog to keep calm during fireworks.

You can help get your dog used to firework noises by slowly exposing them to low-level noises. Play this firework noise video to expose your dog to these noises. Play sounds of fireworks, thunder and rain, children playing, or any other noises that you want to desensitize your dog from. Start by playing the firework sounds quietly. Then, slowly increase the firework noise to the point that your dog isn't exhibiting fearful behaviors but tolerating the firework sound. Make this a rewarding time while playing the video. Play and engage with your dog as you slowly increase the volume. Treat your dog for behaving properly with very high value treats. This helps your dog equate fireworks with good things and good rewards!

This simple training session is a good start to help you and your dog desensitize over the sounds of fireworks, and calm your dog.
