Astronauts aboard the International Space Station captured this striking view of the Amazon rainforest on September 21, 2014.

On an unusually cloud-free day during the dry season, multiple fires were visible across parts of Brazil, marking areas where rainforest was being cleared for agriculture. Thick smoke plumes trace major routes like highway BR-163, revealing how deforestation follows infrastructure deep into the forest.

Against the dark green canopy, red-brown soils appear where trees were removed, forming long chains of cleared land stretching toward remote regions such as the Rio Crepori valley. Large deforested areas are also visible across Mato Grosso, with fires advancing into Pará, now one of the most affected states.

From orbit, deforestation isn’t hidden.
