Moods modulate and circumstances change and we get older. All these things can urge us to understand God differently--to try to relate to and experience him differently. We have various metaphors and methods given to us for understanding who he is (Father, Son, Holy Spirit, Bridegroom of the Church, Shepherd, Healer, Lover, Friend, King, Judge, etc). The roles fulfilled by one lavishly loving, clever being can be overwhelming. For me, this has occasionally made it difficult for me to know how to react. What is my place in this relationship--this, the most important relationship of my life, with the one who created my life and who is asking for ownership of my life again? Who am I to offer it back? ("God it's yours not mine"). I was squinting and smiling for months it seemed, so frustrated, but experiencing such a nitty-gritty sense of love that I couldn't explain away. This song stems from the roots of my favorite hymns and definitions of some of my favorite words that I played over and over in my head, and stared at for hours until I let this out. I knew who my God was the whole time, it was "who are you?" that mocked me, knowing that being called a "sheep" is not a compliment. This is me expressing a year-or-so's worth of spiritual warfare and the seriously delicious peace I found when I calmed down. This is a demo video I recorded to get it out to you guys.
