Southern, Thameslink and Gatwick Express Trains at Purley on August 17th 2023

1st visit to Purley on the Brighton Main Line which is also the junction for services to Caterham and Tattenham Corner

Featuring Southern, Thameslink and Gatwick Express plus one freighter reversing into Platform 6 from near Purley Yd Aggregates

Purley first opened as Godstone Road by the London & Brighton Railway on July 12th 1841 however it only lasted for over 6 years due to low passenger traffic at the time and was closed in October 1847.

The station reopened as Caterham Junction on August 5th 1856 which around that time an ongoing dispute took place between the London & Brighton Railway and the Southeastern Railway which also was around the same time the connecting branch line to Caterham consisted of a single track.

Eventually the station was renamed in October 1888 as Purley

The station was rebuilt between 1896 and 1899 which was at the time of quadrupling the line as well as the opening of the Tattenham Corner Line in stages between 1896 and 1901, the Quarry Line via Redhill built by the South Eastern Railway opened in 1899 which merges back alongside the fast lines south of Redhill near Earlswood.

6 Platforms in total with Platforms 1 and 2 are rarely used by the fast lines, Platforms 3 and 4 are served by Hourly Southern services to and from Reigate and Thameslink services mainly to and from Three Bridges and occasionally Horsham.

Platforms 5 and 6 are used by Southern Services to and from London Bridge which divide at Purley and head to Caterham and Tattenham Corner.
