Autopsy apparently confirmed aortic rupture (rupture of a major blood vessel close to the heart) as the cause of death. Sudden dramatic drop in blood pressure as apparent, the horse collapsed and lost consciousness very quickly. The leg movements are a prey animal's normal reflex to something like this, not a sign of pain. The would have been no warning, no way to know something like this might happen, and nothing that could be done once it happened. Tragic but fortunately not painful ...
