Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities may require lifelong assistance with basic and instrumental activities of daily living. Although research around adult advanced care planning is robust, the literature around long-term care planning for young adult individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities lags behind. With this in mind, it is important to better understand long-term care planning behavior, support systems, and caregiver burden in order to better support these families. Through a cross-sectional study of caregivers of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, our team sought to establish the level of progression in long-term care planning, and to compare if the degree of planning is higher in the presence of caregiver social support. We also sought to assess whether caregiver burden is lower in the presence of social support or engagement in respite care services.
