Historical Background:
For centuries, the citizens of the imperial worried about their safety.
So that the Memminger imperial proposed Gates, towers and walls to protect people from threatening dangers. The original wall was about 3 kilometer around the city and consisted of 28 gates and towers as well as the fortifications, ditches and ramparts in front of it.

1- In 12th century (1101-1200):
the first wall built from stones.

2-In 13th century (1200 -1300):
the initial expansion of the city wall.

3- In 14th century (1300 - 1399):
the third second city expansion of the city wall.

4-In 15th century (1400- 1500):
the third city expansion of the city wall.

5-In 16th to 18th centuries, peasant revolts "the 30 years revolt":
against the Holy Roman Empire, as a result of a range of issues, such as low pay and heavy burdens of taxes. Later on the city was capture by Bavarian and imperial troops in 1647.

6-In 19th Century (1801 to 1900):
the city captured by the Bavarians during the Napoleonic Wars. The greatest wave of demolition of the city defenses occurred with the construction of the railway from 1863.

7-In 20th century to date:
The city bombed during the World War II in 1945. In spring 2018, the city received fund from Unterstützung von Städtebauförderung and Bayerischer Landesstiftung for renovation of the city wall.

Today the gates, the towers, the city wall and the remaining moats are carefully maintained. The fortification with its 5 gates, 5 towers and the approximately 1.4 kilometer long city wall is one of the best preserved city defense systems in Germany.
