The story of Waris Dirie is the story of a strong, extraordinary woman. Waris Dirie (Liya Kebede), a simple nomad girl from Somalia, married at the age of 13, runs away from her family, crosses the desert alone, and gets to Mogadishu. Later, Waris is sent by relatives to London as a servant at the Somali embassy. A few years later, the embassy returns to its war-torn home country, and the girl turns out to be a homeless illegal immigrant in the UK.
By chance, Varys meets a clothes saleswoman from Topshop. The saleswoman - Marilyn (Sally Hawkins) - at first eschews the incomprehensible Somali woman, but sincerely touched by the incredible optimism and caring of the eccentric but kind girl, she helps Varys and becomes her best friend. By chance, Varys tells the girl that she was circumcised as a child. Marilyn is utterly horrified and sincerely sorry for Varys.
