2024 Hyundai Kona First Drive Review: A Spunky Subcompact Grows Up
The subcompact crossover class is booming, and automakers are bringing their A-game with fresh new models loaded with style, tech, and surprising practicality. One of the newest kids on the block is the redesigned 2024 Hyundai Kona, which has morphed into a more refined and roomier ride compared to its predecessor while still maintaining an aura of youthful exuberance.

Funky, Futuristic Styling
From the outset, the 2024 Kona makes a bold visual statement with its futuristic design language. The look is bookended by split headlights up front and an H-branded light bar spanning the hatch out back. Chunky fenders and skid plate elements add a hint of ruggedness. Up front, the Kona's stubby proportions almost give it a bulldog-like stance, while from other angles there are hints of the ultra-popular sci-fi series "Halo" in its styling. Love it or hate it, the Kona is anything but bland.

The cabin complements the exterior with an equally avant-garde design dominated by a wide curved housing that incorporates two 12.3-inch screens – one for the digital instrument cluster and the other serving as the main touchscreen. Ambient lighting pulses around the displays, which get crisper graphics for 2024. Material quality takes a nice step up, but the entry-level trims still utilize some hard, scratchy plastics.

Two Engines, But You'll Want The Turbo
Motivation for the 2024 Kona comes from either a 147-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder or a gutsier 195-hp 1.6-liter turbo-four, the latter of which is included on all-wheel-drive models and upper trims. The base engine feels merely adequate, providing uninspiring acceleration. But the turbo delivers much punchier performance, allowing the Kona to zip around town with genuine verve. Hyundai's excellent eight-speed automatic does an admirable job of keeping the turbo on the boil.

Handling-wise, the new Kona feels more mature and planted than the outgoing model, trading some of its predecessor's youthful rambunctiousness for greater poise. The ride is supple enough for daily driving while body motions remain well controlled. There's still enough steering feedback to keep things engaging. Just don't expect hot hatch thrills – the Kona remains a humble urban runabout.

Value And Practicality
Arguably the biggest improvement for 2024 is an increase in interior room. The Kona's wheelbase has been stretched, providing more space for rear passengers. There's ample storage space for this class too, with over 64 cubic feet of maximum cargo capacity. Pricing starts at $25,625, which is steep for the subcompact class – but the Kona packs in plenty of features, including standard driver assists like automatic emergency braking.

With its head-turning style, improved accommodations, and punchy turbo engine option, the 2024 Hyundai Kona feels like a more complete, well-rounded product than its predecessor. It may no longer be the most youthful offering in the subcompact crossover ranks, but it has happily grown up into a compelling all-around value.
