🇵🇱 Współcześnie berliński S-bahn to jeden z najbardziej rozbudowanych systemów kolei miejskiej w Europie. System istnieje pod nazwą S-bahn od 1930 roku, ale miejska sieć kolei rozwijała się stopniowo już od roku 1891. W czasach podziału Berlina (1961-1989) sieć była podzielona na dwie osobne części: wschodnią i zachodnią. Każdy z podsystemów rozwijał się na własną rękę, m.in. poprzez próby unowocześnienia taboru.

Spółka BVG z Berlina Zachodniego w połowie lat 80. XX wieku zleciła opracowanie nowego typu pociągu. W grudniu 1986 roku zaprezentowano prototypy nowej serii 480, o charakterystycznym trójkątnym przodzie. Seryjną produkcję rozpoczęto siłami firm AEG, Siemens i Waggon Union już po zjednoczeniu Niemiec, w roku 1990.

Pociągi zyskały przydomek "toster", z uwagi na wygląd czoła, a później także jako nawiązanie do kilku pożarów. Po jednym z nich, w tunelu Anhalter Bf w 2004 roku, wycofano je z częściowo podziemnej trasy północ-południe. Lecz pierwotnie jednostki przeznaczono do obsługi tzw. Ringbahnu (linie S41-S47) i tam kursowały najczęściej.

Od grudnia 2022 Ringbahn przejęły nowe jednostki, a BR480 trafiły do bazy w Erkner z przydziałem na linię S3. Po wykonanych modernizacjach, ich eksploatacja jest planowana aż do 2028 roku.

🇬🇧 Nowadays, the Berlin S-bahn is one of the most developed urban rail systems in Europe. The system has existed under the name S-bahn since 1930, but the city railway developed gradually from 1891. During the Berlin Wall period (1961-1989) the network was divided into two separate parts: eastern and western. Each subsystem developed on its own, including attempts to modernize the rolling stock.

In the mid-1980s, the BVG company from West Berlin commissioned the development of a new type of train. The prototypes of the new 480 series with a characteristic triangular front were presented in December 1986. Serial production was started by AEG, Siemens and Waggon Union in 1990, i.e. after the reunification of Germany.

The trains gained the nickname "toaster", due to their triangular design, but later also as a reference to several fires. After one of them, in the Anhalter Bf tunnel in 2004, they were withdrawn from the partially underground north-south route. But originally the units were intended to service the so-called Ringbahn (lines S41-S47) and that's where they ran most often.

From December 2022, as the new units appeared on the Ringbahn, the BR480s were transferred to Erkner to serve the S3 line. After modernization, their operation is planned until 2028.
