かつてインド副王兼総督を務めたジョージ・カーゾン卿の子孫であるベニシア・スタンリー・スミス。19歳の時に人生のより深い意味を求めて英国の貴族階級を離れ、彼女はインドへ旅立ち、やがて日本に辿り着く。日本で結婚をして子供を産み、50年間を第二の故郷として日本で暮らしながら多くの人々に自然と共に生きる素晴らしさを発信してきた。NHKの人気番組「猫のしっぽ カエルの手 」で知られるほか、ハーブやオーガニック ガーデニング、手作りの生活の価値について執筆するベストセラー作家でもある。

Venetia Stanley-Smith, descendant of Lord George Curzon, former Viceroy of India, left her aristocratic roots in the U.K. at the age of 19 to search for deeper meaning in life. Her travels led her to India and then to Japan, where she married, had children, and fell in love with a country that would be come her home for the next 50 years. She is best known for her NHK television series “At Home with Venetia in Kyoto,” and as a best-selling author who writes on herbs, organic gardening and a hand-crafted lifestyle.

【上七軒長谷川】
京都の花街「上七軒」に位置する「上七軒長谷川」の建物は、文政11年 （1828）に家建再興され、明治34年（1901）から平成後期まで「お茶屋 長谷川」として使用された京都に残る数少ない茶屋建築造りの京町家です。お座敷をはじめ、芸妓さんたちが住み込みをしていたお部屋、直木賞作家、水上勉氏が執筆されていたお部屋が当時のまま残っており、上七軒長谷川と共に生きた先人たちの思いと美しき日本の残像が、今も色濃く残る建物です。
