On August 24th, SpaceX was set for a major moment with Starship’s 10th test flight, but the launch ended up being scrubbed due to a problem. The decision to stand down was disappointing for many, especially because this mission has been anticipated for months. Still, the good news is that the issue doesn’t seem to involve the rocket itself and could be resolved soon.
Leading up to the attempt, preparations looked smooth. Fueling was given the go-ahead about an hour before launch, with propellant flowing into both stages. Excitement was high, given that nearly three months had passed since the last Starship flight and the importance of this mission for SpaceX’s long-term plans. But about 35 minutes before launch, the process suddenly stopped. A hold was called, and then, 17 minutes before the planned liftoff, the abort was confirmed. The rocket began venting fuel, and the attempt was over for the day.
SpaceX later explained that the delay came from an issue with the ground support equipment—meaning Starship itself wasn’t at fault, but rather the complex infrastructure on the pad that handles fueling, pressurization, and other critical prelaunch steps. Eyewitnesses near the site pointed to the ship quick disconnect system as a possible culprit. This system is essentially the spacecraft’s “umbilical cord,” linking heavy-duty fuel and oxidizer lines to Starship until just before launch. Any misalignment or valve problem here can halt an entire countdown. Workers were later seen making manual adjustments to this system, suggesting they found something that required hands-on fixes. The fact that this system hadn’t been used for a real fueling in months could mean a hidden fault—like a sticky latch or a slow-sealing valve—only became obvious when actual cryogenic propellants were flowing.
