The fuel gauge itself is a D'Arsonval type rather than a stepper motor. This problem is said to occur quite often as a result of low battery conditions and jump starting. During all of the time we've owned it, this is the first time such has happened.

The parasitic draw problem turned out to be a result of leaving the controller module for the abandoned air ride system connected to power.

Some people have used a magnet to fix the meter needle. I remain unconvinced that this is a good idea, since the mechanism is fragile. Even though I have tried it with dangerously powerful magnets, my results were poor.
