History of Mabgate in Leeds

Описание к видео History of Mabgate in Leeds

Mabgate is an intriguing inner city area of Leeds with an interesting past. During the 16th and 17th centuries, as Leeds experienced a rapid growth largely due to the textile and twine industry, Mabgate began to be populated by small businesses and workshops. By the seventeenth century, Mabgate was an established route into the city from the east, and an important industrial area, but it was also a place with a poor reputation. This may be reflected in its name, as ‘Mabs’ were people of ill repute plying their trade in the street or ‘gate’. This video describes the history of Mabgate and answers the question, "Was there ever a City of Mabgate?"
