Can a cup of coffee stop a resignation? There is a story I tell often and it’s about working with a CEO client of mine in Mumbai who was losing team members faster than he could replace them. His initial solution was to pay them more, but it wasn’t working, and he was losing patience. So, I asked him a question - “have you asked them why they are leaving?” For a moment, he looked puzzled before admitting that the answer was ’no’. We agreed it was a good place to start.🗣

Six weeks later:

“Mimi, the resignations have stopped!”
“Fantastic, what changed Sanjay?”
“Well, I learnt that the problem was the chai machine!”

Now of course, it wasn’t only the fault of an old chai machine, but what Sanjay uncovered was the status that the team connected to really good coffee (in really quality cups) and the impact it would make on their daily interactions in the workplace. It turns out that chai is quite frankly not cool for young developers in India today because “only the aunties drink chai.” ☕

It wasn’t about the salary; it was about feeling understood and valued. A small change, an espresso machine and branded cups, transformed their perception, of his perception, of them. Resignations slowed, and his team felt seen.
