Bing Crosby recorded I'll Be Home for Christmas on October 1, 1943 with John Scott Trotter and His Orchestra, releasing it later that month on Decca 18570A. Written by Walter Kent and Kim Gannon, the song was intended as a message of comfort to soldiers and families separated by World War II.

The single became a top 10 hit, charting for 11 weeks and peaking at No. 3. Its emotional resonance led to widespread radio play and enduring popularity, despite being briefly banned by the BBC for its melancholy tone. The B-side of the original release was “Danny Boy.”

Crosby’s version is slow and solemn, backed by strings and subtle choral support. It helped define the postwar holiday sound and remains one of the most requested Christmas songs of all time. In 2021, it was featured in an official music video and continues to stream across major platforms.
