Rekha Chamoli, a teacher in the Government Primary School, Ganeshpur, Uttarkashi, is a silent hero at work. While she did not intend to become a teacher to begin with, her becoming one has transformed not only her life but potentially, the lives of hundreds of children in Uttarkashi. Her vision of the school, the way she brings in the whole language approach to the classroom, her focus on students’ creativity and peer learning as well as the discarding of the conventional examination system as a measure of a child’s caliber, make the Ganeshpur school an example of what a good school should look like.

Good Schools - Government school system in India is one of the largest and most complex public systems across the world with 1.1 million schools providing education to 143 million students.today 98% of India’s villages have a primary school within a walking distance of 1 km. This has led to a massive increase in enrollment, particularly of the girl child, reduction in the drop rates and improved youth literacy. Despite these achievements, government schools generally carry a negative image. This is because we expect much more from our government schools, and rightfully so. However, further improvements will take time and it is our shared responsibility to make this happen. We work closely with the government schools and we have seen many positive stories. By bringing you some of these, we want you to decide for yourself. The series features a few good government schools across the country.
