The earlier drill occurred in August 2025, signaling Tehran's ongoing emphasis on bolstering defenses post-conflict. The IRGC fired a salvo of precision-guided missiles from launch sites deep within Iran's mainland, covering distances of over 1,000 kilometers to hit designated sea and coastal targets.
In addition to missiles, the exercise incorporated drone swarms (including Shahed-136 and Arash-24 models) for coordinated attacks on mock bases, high-speed boat maneuvers to deploy naval mines, and tests of air defense and electronic warfare systems across the Strait of Hormuz. IRGC commanders described the operation as a "comprehensive test of deterrence capabilities," with one official noting a missile's range exceeded the Persian Gulf's length.
The timing and location underscore Iran's post-war posture: Tehran has repeatedly vowed to repel any renewed Israeli aggression, viewing the Strait of Hormuz as a leverage point for asymmetric warfare. Iran has historically threatened to mine or blockade the strait during escalations, potentially disrupting global energy markets. This drill follows heightened rhetoric against U.S. naval presence in the Gulf, with IRGC warnings issued to American warships to avoid the exercise zone.
The U.S. response was measured but vigilant: The Pentagon elevated force protection to Level Charlie for nearby carrier strike groups (USS Carl Vinson and USS Harry S. Truman), deployed additional surveillance assets like P-8A Poseidon aircraft and MQ-4C Triton drones, and repositioned destroyers (USS Spruance and USS Paul Hamilton) for monitoring. Officials confirmed no incursions into international airspace or threats to commercial shipping.
