Kazushi Sakuraba’s second PRIDE appearance would be opposite the Ronin, Carlos Newton, from the commonwealth nations. A performance widely considered at this point in time to be the gold standard of grappling exchanges, due to the extreme disparity in styles, both anathema to the other. Newton would refuse to expose his back to Sakuraba, and Sakuraba would refuse to expose his back to the mat.
In a twist of irony, Newton’s primary grappling art is Jiujitsu, Japanese in origin, and Sakuraba’s Lancashire catch as catch can style, as taught by an Englishman, Billy Robinson. These styles do not mix, like oil and water. And, like oil and water, when combined, they can create beautiful, colorful, swirling patterns.
