Lunch Hour Lecture | Medical leadership and gender disparities in England and India

Physicians’ engagement has long been regarded as a critical component for effective performance in healthcare organisations. The World Health Organization highlights that low- and middle-income countries such as India must increase coverage of priority health services to accomplish health-related sustainable development goals. While the majority of hospital CEOs in India are physicians, the opposite is the case in the UK and in both countries MD MBA graduates are rare. In the National Health Service, there are increasing efforts to involve physicians in senior management teams and to encourage flexible and portfolio working. Our research project findings provide valuable insights into inequalities, (quiet) quitting, and medical career crafting to understand medical leadership development and engaging physicians in institutional decision-making to improve clinical outcomes.

Professor Julie Davies
Director at UCL’s MBA Health programme in the Global Business School for Health

Professor Julie Davies is Director of UCL’s MBA Health programme in the Global Business School for Health and leads the two-week global health challenge field visit to Saudi Arabia each January with a focus on last phase of life care. Julie has published on medical leadership development in India based on a UCL-AIIMS Delhi research project and co-facilitated Chevening-funded workshops and mentoring for hospital physicians in northern India with Dr Kamal Gulati, AIIMS Delhi. She supervises PhD students in health management and planetary health. Professor Davies’ research interests include (medical) leadership development, health and climate change, equality, diversity and inclusion, micro-entrepreneurship, qualitative research methods, and management education. Julie has designed and delivered executive education in China, East Africa, Kuwait (Jazeera Airways, Kuwait Petroleum Corporation, and the National Bank of Kuwait), Russia, Singapore and has extensive distance learning experience. Honorary Lecturer at UCL Global Business School for Health

Dr Kamal Gulati is Senior Scientist at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, and Honorary Lecturer, UCL Global Business School for Health. His areas of research interest include medical leadership development, project management, medical education, and health service research. He is a recipient of the Chevening Research, Science, and Innovation Leadership Fellowship of University of Oxford; International Fellowship of the Institute of Advanced Studies of Warwick University; ZonMW fellowship of Erasmus University; and the DBT-Wellcome Trust international research management award.
