The "volcano snail" (Chrysomallon squamiferum) is a species of deep-sea snail that builds an iron shell and foot plating from iron sulfide. Living near hydrothermal vents in the Indian Ocean, it uses this unique armor to protect itself from crushing pressures, extreme temperatures, and predators. Its shell is composed of three layers: a tough, iron sulfide outer layer, a protein-based middle layer, and an inner layer made of calcium carbonate.
Iron shell: The snail's shell has three layers, with the outermost layer being composed of iron sulfides like gregite, which is magnetic. The middle layer is made of a tough, waterproof protein called conchin, and the inner layer is made of aragonite, a form of calcium carbonate. 
Extreme habitat: The snail lives near hydrothermal vents, where temperatures can reach up to \(750\) °F (\(400\) °C). However, it lives in the cooler transition zones around the vents, typically between \(176\) °F and \(200\) °F (\(80\) °C and \(93\) °C). 
Diet: The snail has a unique way of feeding, absorbing iron particles from the vent fluids to build its iron-infused body. It also relies on symbiotic bacteria to convert vent chemicals into nutrients. 
Conservation status: The volcano snail is the first animal ever listed as endangered due to the threat of deep-sea mining.
