Visualising the mass of soil microorganisms

Carbon, nitrogen, sulphur and phosphorus can be measured to calculate the weight of the microbial biomass. Estimates for Western Australia range between 200 and 2000 kilograms per hectare of living microorganisms in a hectare o soil - with this living component of soil supporting critical ecosystem services.
