Die Wimbachklamm Ramsau

Wildly romantic valley at the feet of the Watzmann

At the entrance to the huge high valley between Watzmann and Hochkalter in the mountaineering village of Ramsau lies a narrow gorge: the Wimbachklamm. While the rear Wimbachtal, the so-called Wimbachgries, is covered by dry gravel and the water flows underground, the water of the torrent in the Wimbachklamm comes to the surface with a loud noise and falls in steep waterfalls into the narrow rocky gorge. Bridges and footbridges on the steep rocks enable a hike through the Wimbachklamm.

A geological attraction in the Berchtesgaden National Park

The Wimbachklamm in the Berchtesgaden National Park is not only a geologically impressive sight and a wildly romantic natural monument, but also a popular excursion destination for hikers and walkers. The power of water becomes clear here, as does the immense amount of time that nature needs to shape such landscapes. Entry into the Wimbachklamm is only possible from one side, from the beginning of the gorge. You can get vouchers for entry to the gorge through a turnstile at a machine at Wimbachlehen about 300 meters before the entrance to Wimbachklamm. If you go back from Wimbach Castle, it is no longer possible to go through, but you can bypass the gorge above.

Hiking in the Wimbachtal: Wimbachklamm and Wimbachgries

The hike through the Wimbachtal to the Wimbachgrieshütte is an extensive tour. The path through the Wimbachklamm, however, is only a short walk. And very spectacular: over a length of around 200 meters, the hiking trail winds over bridges and footbridges along the steep rock walls of the gorge. If you go a little further, you can stop off at the Wimbach Castle: it used to be a hunting lodge for the Wittelsbach family, but today it serves as a mountain restaurant in the national park. In the back part of the Wimbach valley is the Wimbachgrieshütte, a mountain hut with overnight accommodation.
