Hatebase is a Toronto startup that uses natural language processing to help companies rid their ecosystems of hate speech, while also helping government agencies, law enforcement and NGOs perform threat assessments in conflict areas. This talk will focus on some of the challenges Hatebase has encountered in analyzing online conversation while balancing users' expectation of free speech against governments' regulatory crackdowns on hate speech, as well as on opportunities for future innovation in the field of content moderation.

Bio: Timothy Quinn is a co-founding principal of Hatebase, as well as Chief Technology Officer of the government procurement platform OMX. He is an advisor to several organizations, including the United Nations, the International Development Research Centre, NeedsList and the Canadian Executive Service Organization.
