Plate tectonics is indeed a combination of two major theories in geology: isostasy and continental drift.

Isostasy is the idea that the Earth's crust is floating on a partially liquid mantle and that the thickness of the crust varies in response to changes in its load. This concept was first proposed by British geologist Sir George Airy in the 19th century.

Continental drift, on the other hand, was first proposed by German meteorologist and geophysicist Alfred Wegener in the early 20th century. He suggested that the continents were once part of a single landmass that broke apart and drifted to their present locations over a long period of time.
