The story of Peter Freuchen is about a remarkable Danish explorer and adventurer who lived during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in 1886 in Nykøbing, Denmark, Freuchen initially pursued a medical education at the University of Copenhagen, as per his father's wishes. However, he soon realized that his true passion lay in exploring the Arctic and experiencing the harsh conditions of the far north.
In 1906, Freuchen embarked on his first expedition to Greenland alongside his friend, the Danish ethnographer and polar explorer Knud Rasmussen. During this expedition, they lived among the indigenous Inuit people, studying their culture and geography. Freuchen chose to stay behind when Rasmussen returned to Denmark and spent six months living an Arctic lifestyle, building an igloo, hunting seals, and surviving encounters with wolves and polar bears.
Together with Rasmussen, Freuchen established a trading post in northern Greenland, known as Thule, which became a profitable venture. He married a local Inuit woman and had children but later lost his wife to the Spanish flu in 1920. Devastated by her death, Freuchen joined Rasmussen on a new Arctic expedition, which led to a life-threatening situation. He became trapped under a snow-covered sled during a storm and had to use his resourcefulness to escape, fashioning a makeshift tool from his own frozen feces to chisel his way out.
Despite enduring this harrowing experience, Freuchen continued his adventures, writing about his Arctic experiences and even becoming involved in filmmaking. His screenplay "Eskimo" was turned into a successful movie that won an Oscar, and he took over the Danish Travel Club.
During World War II, when Denmark was occupied by Nazi Germany, Freuchen became a prominent figure in the Danish Resistance against the occupation. He was arrested by the Nazis and sentenced to death but managed to escape, eventually finding his way to the United States, where he settled in New York.
Peter Freuchen's adventurous spirit never waned, and he was preparing for another Arctic expedition when he passed away from a heart attack on September 2, 1957. His final wish was to have his ashes scattered on a mountain in Greenland, near Thule, marking the end of his incredible journey as an Arctic explorer and adventurer.
