Spring rafting on the Ocoee River is a unique experience. While the 2023 season is well underway, April brings a "cool snap" that demands a technical approach. This video captures my second commercial trip of the season, a Sunday run where the overcast skies cleared just in time for some rowdy river play.

This run was intentionally less splashy to accommodate the cooler temperatures, but we didn't skip the meat. We hit technical play spots like Hillbilly Surf and Washing Machine. As an expert guide, I made the call to skip the drop surf at Slice and Dice—a 400-level move I call "Paddle Fu"—to keep the crew from getting too soaked in the frisky spring water.

Safety and precision are the names of the game. It is critical that the crew follows commands promptly and correctly when navigating these Class III benchmark rapids. Random, uninstructed paddling increases the risk to the crew by throwing off the balance and steering of the raft. Whether it's an April "Polar Bear Club" run or the heat of the summer, you don't need to be wealthy to live a rich life full of adventure.
