We Were Here The Untold History of Black Africans in Renaissance Europe
is an award winning documentary by Afro Italian filmmaker Fred Kuwornu that redefines how we understand Black History, Renaissance history and Europe’s cultural identity through art.
Accepted as an official submission for the Academy Awards Best Documentary Feature and the 57th NAACP Image Awards, the film also premiered at the Central Pavilion of the 60th International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia 2024, curated by Adriano Pedrosa.
The documentary sheds light on the hidden presence of Africans and people of African descent in Renaissance Europe, revealing how Black figures appear in masterpieces of 15th and 16th century European art. Were they enslaved individuals or servants, or were they courtiers, artists, ambassadors and saints? Through art history, visual analysis and historical research, the film challenges dominant narratives and reframes Black presence as central to European history long before colonialism.
Filmed across Italy, Spain, Portugal, France, the Netherlands, England and Brazil, this multilingual documentary features leading art historians, museum curators and Black Studies scholars. Their contributions transform familiar Renaissance paintings into new historical testimonies of presence, resistance, dignity and cultural memory.
Positioned at the intersection of Black History, Renaissance Studies and African Diaspora history, the film has become a valuable educational resource for universities, museums and academic libraries.
