“Cirice” by Ghost off of their album, Meliora which came out in 2015 and and features Nameless Ghoul ▽ (Water) on bass.

I think this hauntingly-heavy song has a really cool bass line. I’m not sure whether the bass actually plays the “chick-a-now” parts along with the guitars, but I did. I really struggled with the part at 2:00. While the notes make very little sense, I believe that is what is being played on the recording. It almost sounds like it was a mistake that just happened to “work”.

Special thanks once again to my friend, Jim Trice, who sent me pitch corrected versions of the songs so I could work on them while this bass was being worked on. This way I was able to learn the songs in concert pitch and then just transition over to the studio versions once I got this bass back. According to Jim, raising the pitch makes it a bit easier to hear certain things as opposed to learning the songs in drop D tuning. I can see where this would make sense. He provided me with 3 songs by Ghost.

“this bass” is a 2009 Woodstock, NY - Made, Spector NS-4H2. When I first got it, I had a bunch of work done to it - changing out the neck p/u (with an EMG 35P) and the pre-amp (with an SNC), swapping out the black hardware for gold… For this second round of work, I had the EMG Dual function MusicMan p/u switched to a “reverse” model which moved the Single-coil bar from the rear of the p/u (close to the bridge) to the front of the p/u (closer to the neck). I wrote in agonizing detail on my “Smoke From a Distant Fire” video it you’d like to put yourself through that. Moving that coil forward a bit gave the p/u a throatier, more usable tone than before. And, I had the bass set up to be used for songs that are tuned down a whole-step, like this one. This just meant a slightly heavier gauge of strings and a set-up.

Here’s a link to an unlisted video of me in the process of working on the song with the “pitch corrected” version from Jim which is full of mistakes and stuff like that -    • Cirice Bass Cover in Progress - Pitch...
